Old Malay Traditions and Religion

The communities in the lowlands of Sumatra and in the surrounding river systems have much in common regarding language and traditions. The social-cultural differences are due to specific adaptations to the local environment, often caused by external influences brought in with economics, politics, and communications with other ethnic groups outside the immediate area.

Over 500 years ago the communities living in this area have professed the Moslem religion. Intensive trade and intermarriage with external people have helped the expansion of Islamic influence. While most Old Malays are Moslem, there are still some who hold traditional beliefs because of their objection to food restriction in Islam and for other reasons.
